Who are the big three asset management companies?
The Big Three asset management companies are BlackRock, Vanguard, and State Street Global Advisors.
In the passive investing world, three asset managers reign supreme: Vanguard, BlackRock (which operates iShares ETFs) and State Street, which manages the SPDR line of index funds. If you recognize these names, it could be because you've seen them in your company's 401(k) lineup.
The three largest index fund managers—BlackRock, Inc. (“BlackRock”); State Street Global Advisors, a division of State Street Corporation (“SSGA”); and the Vanguard Group (“Vanguard”)—collectively known as the “Big Three,” own an increasingly large proportion of American public companies.
As of 2024, the Vanguard Group ranked third among global fund managers by assets under management (AUM). Rounding out the top three, Charles Schwab ranked second, managing fund assets totaling 7.32 trillion U.S. dollars. BlackRock was the largest fund manager, managing fund assets exceeding nine trillion U.S.
The top 5 of asset managers included in this ranking are BlackRock, 9,464 US$b, (They hit 10tn AUM as per December 2021), Vanguard, with 8,400 US$b, UBS Group, one of two European Asset Managers who made the Top 10 with 4,432 US$b, Fidelity with 4,230 US$b, and State Street Global Advisors with 3,860 US$b.
The “Big Three” institutional investors, BlackRock, State Street Global Advisors and Vanguard, recently released proxy voting policies and related guidance for the 2023 proxy season.
BlackRock's competitors and similar companies include Fidelity Investments, Berkshire Hathaway, Charles Schwab, Edward Jones, Vanguard, State Street and Northern Trust. BlackRock is a company that provides investment advisory and risk management solutions.
Who owns BlackRock? BlackRock is not owned by a single individual or company. Instead, its shares are owned by a large number of individual and institutional investors. The biggest institutional shareholders such as The Vanguard Group and State Street are merely custodians of the stock for their clients.
If you're looking for an option that lets you play a hands-on role in your investing decisions, Vanguard would be the better option. If you're looking for passive options, either firm could be the answer.
Three of the main types of asset classes are equities, fixed income, and cash and equivalents. For individual investors, these are more commonly referred to as stocks, bonds and cash. An investor's asset allocation, or mix of asset types, is the foundation of portfolio construction.
What are the big 3 BlackRock?
The “Big Three” institutional investors, BlackRock, State Street Global Advisors and Vanguard, have significant influence on the environmental, social and governance (ESG) policies and related disclosure for public companies.
Both Vanguard and BlackRock operate as asset management behemoths, collectively overseeing trillions of dollars in assets. What makes this relationship symbiotic is the unique ownership structure they share.
As such, it is advantageous to focus on fund families instead of fund providers. BlackRock Funds top the list in terms of assets held by a single fund family, followed by other familiar names such as Vanguard, Charles Schwab, State Street Global Advisors, and Fidelity Investments.
As of my last update in September 2021, several companies were bigger than BlackRock, which is one of the world's largest investment management firms. Some of these larger companies include: Vanguard Group: A prominent investment management company with a wide range of funds and ETFs.
BlackRock manages about $9 trillion in assets, including about $2.6 trillion in its US ETFs. Though not as large of an asset manager, Fidelity had $11.5 trillion assets under administration, as of Sept. 30.
The ranking of the top 10 global managers was almost unchanged from last year. BlackRock retained the top spot with €7.1trn of AUM, with Vanguard, Fidelity, SSGA, Capital Group and JPMAM also keeping their positions.
BlackRock is the world's largest investment manager, with $10 trillion of assets under management. There's a lot of misunderstanding about the companies BlackRock owns and what it does.
- BlackRock. $9,425,212,000,000. ...
- Vanguard. $7,250,000,000,000. ...
- Fidelity Management & Research. $3,880,000,000,000. ...
- The Capital Group Cos. Inc. ...
- Amundi. $2,248,114,680,000. ...
- Pacific Investment Management Company LLC. $1,740,000,000,000. ...
- Invesco. $1,585,300,000,000. ...
- Franklin Resources Inc. $1,455,500,000,000.
BlackRock can then use its proxy voting infrastructure to cast votes based on the client's selected voting policy. Clients have the choice to rely on BlackRock Investment Stewardship for all of their voting decisions.
The Government Pension Investment Fund of Japan remains the largest asset owner in the world, with an AUM of US$1.4 trillion alone. The top three also includes the two largest sovereign wealth funds.
What does BlackRock own?
How many companies does BlackRock own? As of November 2023, BlackRock's portfolio consisted of 5,349 holdings. The top five holdings included Apple (AAPL), Microsoft (MSFT), NVIDIA (NVDA), Amazon (AMSN), and Alphabet (GOOGL).
BlackRock, as the largest global investment management company, and a leading voice in the investment community on climate and energy transition-related investment themes, has found itself at the center of a vocal anti-ESG movement by Republican politicians in the U.S., who have accused the firm of following a social ...

Vanguard is owned by its member funds, which in turn are owned by fund shareholders. With no outside owners to satisfy, this structure ensures business and portfolio management decision focuses squarely on meeting the investment needs of our investors.
Influence and power
BlackRock invests the funds of its clients (for example, the owners of iShares exchange-traded fund units) in numerous publicly traded companies, some of which compete with each other.
