Darlings, when it comes to the magical world of fragrance, there’s so much to explore! To make it easier for us all to discover our favourite scents and find your perfect perfume, fragrances are classified into four different olfactory groups, otherwise known as fragrance families: amber, floral, fresh and woody.
These four fragrance families take up a respective space on the Fragrance Wheel, originally invented by scent expert Michael Edwards, alongside fragrance subfamilies to illustrate how different scents are connected, overlap and differ. Once you’ve discovered which fragrance family you want to wear, the fragrance wheel makes it easier to identify the scents you like so you can source your next favourite fragrance.

Amber fragrance family
Amber fragrances are usually rich, warm and full-bodied and can smell spicy, herby and dry. Because of their distinctive scent, amber fragrances give off a strong first impression and are usually long-lasting.
Subfamilies of the amber fragrance family
Subfamilies of the amber fragrance family include woody amber, amber and soft amber.
Common notes of amber fragrances
Common notes of amber fragrances include orange blossom, vanilla, myrrh, anise, tobacco, spices and amber.

Floral fragrance family
Floral is one of the most popular fragrance families. Typically feminine and featuring complementary petals and aromas, floral fragrances can smell soft and powdery or like freshly cut flowers.
Subfamilies of the floral fragrance family
Fruity, floral and soft floral are all subfamilies of the floral fragrance family.
Common notes of floral fragrances
Common notes of fragrances in the floral family include iris, jasmine, rose, jasmine, orange blossom and lily of the valley.

Fragrances belonging to the fresh family are usually characterised as light, bright and clean. Typically, fresh fragrances have citrus and fruity top notes, which are backed by underlying woodsy notes to give the fragrances an energetic character.

Subfamilies of the fresh fragrance family include water, aromatic, green and citrus.
Common notes of fresh fragrances
Common notes of fragrances in the fresh family include citrus, white flowers, bergamot, lemon, sea salt, apple, kiwi and pineapple.
