How many kinds of traps are there? ›

In brief, there are different types of traps in Plumbing: Floor Trap or Nahni Trap, Gully Trap, P Trap, Q Trap, S Trap, Intercepting Trap, Bottle Trap, Grease Trap.

Types. Most of the traps used for mammals can be divided into six types: foothold traps, body gripping traps, snares, deadfalls, cages, and glue traps.

Indiscriminate and inhumane nature of body-gripping traps

Body-gripping traps—such as snares, Conibear traps, and steel-jaw leghold traps—are inhumane and inherently nonselective, meaning they indiscriminately injure and kill nontarget animals, including endangered and threatened species and even pets.

The trap is named Conibear after the man who made it - Frank Conibear. It was in the early 1950's that he first created the device, and it was during the later end of the decade that it started to become available on shelves around the USA.

The most common type of killing devices are bodygrip traps, also called rotating jaw traps. Live-restraining devices include foothold traps, enclosed foothold devices, cage traps, and some types of cable devices.

The following types of traps shall be prohibited: Traps that depend upon moving parts to maintain their seal. Bell traps. Crown vented traps.

Opponents of bear traps argue that they are cruel and inhumane, and that they cause unnecessary suffering to animals. They also argue that there are more effective and humane methods for controlling bear populations, such as using non-lethal deterrents or relocating bears using tranquilizers.

Only eight states have enacted bans or significant restrictions on leghold traps: Florida, Rhode Island, New Jersey, Arizona, Colorado, Massachusetts, California and Washington.

The toughest animal to trap is the coyote. “You have to do a number of things right in order to be able to catch foxes.” But to trap a coyote, “you've got to do everything right.” “Coyotes will kill a fox because they're in competition for food,” he said.

'Accidental' Victims

Not only are traps cruel, they are also completely indiscriminate. Every year, dogs, cats, birds, and other animals—including endangered species—are “accidentally” crippled or killed by traps placed in public areas across the country.
