LG Refrigerator Cooling Defect Class Action Settlement (2)

Plaintiffs in the LG refrigerator class action lawsuit claimed that their appliances were defective due to a cooling defect which caused refrigerator failure. Due to the alleged defect, refrigerators failed to stay cool and therefore spoiled food.

Unfortunately, the cooling defect was reportedly not covered by LG under warranty. One plaintiff says he was forced to pay $700 to have the issue diagnosed and fixed. When the appliance failed again less than a year later, he claims he was forced to pay out-of-pocket once more for repairs.

LG has not admitted any wrongdoing but has agreed to resolve the claims against them with a $1.5 million LG refrigerator class action settlement. Under the terms of the deal, LG customers can collect cash payments depending on their situation.

Without proof of purchase, Class Members can collect up to $50 for unsuccessful repairs, $100 for out-of-pocket labor costs, $50 for delayed repairs, and up to $250 for property loss.

Proof of purchase will entitle Class Members to higher payments, including full reimbursem*nt for labor and parts, up to $1,000 for unsuccessful repairs, up to $1,000 for delayed repairs, up to $3,500 for property loss, and $650 for replacement of LG refrigerators. More information about payments is available in the “Potential Award” section below.

LG is also implementing an enhanced customer care program which will extend LG refrigerator warranties and provide payments for cooling defect issues in the future.

In order to benefit from the LG refrigerator class action settlement, Class Members must file a valid claim form by Feb. 5, 2021. Receipts, invoices, photographs, payment card records, inspection records, insurance records, or other reasonable documentary proof are not required but may result in higher payments for Class Members.

The deadline for exclusion and objection in the settlement is Dec. 10, 2020. The final approval hearing for the LG refrigerator class action settlement is scheduled for Dec. 15, 2020.

I purchased my LG refrigerator on August 5, 2020, and had to wait until September 8 for it to be delivered because of the pandemic. Then this spring it started sounding very loud when it ran—which was most of the time. My electric bill has even increased. Then I discovered lower cooling temperatures. I called and they sent A and E Electronics and the technician informed me that this is a common problem and is not fixable; a new compressor cannot function with a bad design issue. Now I believe I am getting the run-around with LG. The call center answering service probably has no idea how to handle these calls and usually hang up, but yesterday one said that someone would call me by today, August 11, 2021, which is not happening. This is over a thousand-dollar replacement cost. I trusted the LG warranty and integrity. After the recall, why are they still selling inferior merchandise?!!! And getting away with it?!!!

Why is this suit ending at 2017 models when clearly after reading these comments, there are SO many of us that are having the same experiences with LG on models from 2018 and beyond?? My compressor died 2 weeks ago and LG has done nothing more than offer $250 for my lost groceries (holding my breath on that because 2 agents offered that but the 2nd said it wasn’t in my file). I’m now waiting for a repair service to come this week after the one they sent last week (with 1 star on Yelp) cancelled. This has been a nightmare, especially with two children at home under 4. Our refrigerator was brand new when we moved to our home in 2020 and it broke only a little over a year later. This really is unacceptable and this class action suit should be reopened or a new one issued. Even when we paid for our own repairman, he laughed when he saw it was LG and said 90% of his house calls are for the brand and the brand is “bullsh*t”…so how are they still in business when they sell shiny pretty appliances that break a year later and then don’t stand by their products???

We purchased an LG Counter-depth refrigerator (LFXC24726) through Home Depot in November of 2016. On June 27, 2021 (a Sunday) it stopped cooling. At the time of our purchase, we also purchased a 5 yr. extension on the warranty. I called the number for filing a claim through the warranty (Home Depot), but because of the weekend, it (probably) was not reported to LG until the following day (Monday). I later found out there are no LG Repair Services for the area where I live(45 miles outside of Portland, Oregon), so service calls are “farmed” out to a third party – A&E Factory Service. Eventually I was notified that a service appointment with A&E had been scheduled for July 29 — 32 days after my refrigerator stopped working. All of my efforts to get an earlier appointment were unsuccessful.

I became aware of the class action suit against LG in late 2020 and was aware of the deadline for filing a claim to become part of that action. Unfortunately, I was not “eligible” at the time and the deadline is now passed.

It’s frustrating to read all the comments about the problems people have had with LG refrigerators and even more frustrating that it does not seem to be a repairable problem (or at least a lasting repair). For more than a month, we have been living out of an ice chest, buying ice daily and severely limiting what food items we have on hand that require refrigeration. The service technician is scheduled to come today, but I must say I am not feeling hopeful that a) he/she will have the necessary part(s) in their truck to get us back up and running, or b) that if/when it is repaired, the repair will last for any length of time.

I guess it’s time to start thinking about a new refrigerator. And on that point… isn’t it reasonable to expect a major appliance, such as a refrigerator, to last more that 5 yrs… a lot more?

Our LG counter depth fridge stopped working a few months ago. A LG tech came to fix it after 9 days. We used coolers for more than a week and had to throw away a lot of food. Today after 2 months, the fridge stopped cooling again. We got the fridge in 2015. It was priced at $3500 at that time. I had mailed them my registration but somehow didn’t get notified about the lawsuit. Will I still get reimbursed for the price of the fridge? We spent so much on a fancy fridge which didn’t last even 5 years. I have sworn off LG products forever.

Like most others, the compressor on my Kenmore Elite Refrigerator has gone bad. I was made to understand that LG took over all of the Sears Products. After paying close to $3,000 for my refrigerator in 2018, and now not able to get it repaired timely (triple ugh!). Sears and LG are the worst. I will never have a kind word to say about these products. I wish that I had been notified about the law suit, I certainly would have attached my name to it. I am still waiting for a tech to come out and take a look at repairing my refrigerator. In the meantime, I had an outside tech that works on all Sears and LG products come out and take a look. Outcome, Yes, my issue is like most others, the compressor went bad, and It is now day number 10 in the waiting game. It is such a shame that we as consumers have to get taken for a “western ride by Sears and LG, as well as getting high jacked to boot.”
