German delegation meets with JU Rector-ElectOn 29 May, the Jagiellonian University was visited by a delegation from the Committee on Education, Research and Technology Assessment of the German Bundestag led by its President Prof. Stephan Seiter. The delegation also included Dr Ingeborg Gräßle, Maja Wallstein and Andreas Meyer. Representatives of the German government met in the Senate Room of the JU Collegium Novum with the JU Rector-Elect Prof. Piotr Jedynak. The meeting was also attended by the Consul of the Federal Republic of Germany in Kraków Dagmar Hillebrand.
New Version of Scientific Journals Onlineejournals – the new version of Scientific Journals Online portal of the Jagiellonian University Press - is a modern platform for online publishing, presentation and distribution of research journals from different fields of research. There are over 110 academic periodicals published by 25 institutions currently collaborating with ejournals. 4.5-5 million files are downloaded from the website each year.JU delegation takes part in Coimbra Group General AssemblyOn 4-7 June 2024, the University of Turku and Åbo Akademi University (Finland) are hosting the Coimbra Group Annual Conference and General Assembly. The topic of the Annual Conference is 'Research and Education – Most Impactful Together'. The participants include representatives of member institutions of this prestigious network of European universities, including the Jagiellonian University.Lecture by the President of Cyprus at the Jagiellonian UniversityOn 24 May, the Jagiellonian University was visited by the President of the Republic of Cyprus Nikos Christodoulides with his spouse Philippa Karsera. The visit included a meeting with the University authorities and a lecture delivered to guests gathered in the Collegium Novum Assembly Hall.Małopolska Centre of Biotechnology celebrates its 10th anniversaryOn 13 May 2014 the Małopolska Centre of Biotechnology (MCB) was opened at the JU Campus by the then Rector of the Jagiellonian University Prof. Wojciech Nowak. On 24 May 2024 the Jagiellonian University celebrated the 10th anniversary of the creation of this international research centre within the framework of the oldest Polish higher education institution. The jubilee celebrations were accompanied by the opening of new premises of the MCB.
Results of 9th Smart Book contest announcedNatural History of the Future: What the Laws of Biology Tell Us about the Destiny of the Human Species by Rob Dunn was chosen Smart Book of the Year 2023. The winners in this and four other categories were announced during the Smart Book of the Year award gala, which was held on 23 May 2024 as part of the Copernicus Festival.JU researchers published in Chemical ReviewsA review paper written by members of the Multifunctional Luminescent Materials Group: Jakub Zakrzewski, Michał Liberka and Dr. hab. Szymon Chorąży, Prof. UJ, has been published in the jorunal Chemical Reviews. The paper was co-authored by Dr Junhao Wang from the University of Tsukuba and Prof. Shin-ichi Ohkoshi from the University of Tokyo.IMPULSE Kick-off meeting at the Jagiellonian UniversityThe IMPULSE project (IMmersive digitalization: uPcycling cULtural heritage towards new reviving StratEgies), funded within the framework of the Horizon Europe programme, was officially kicked off in the JU Auditorium Maximum. The project, coordinated by Dr Żaneta Kubic from the JU Museum Collegium Maius, received a grant of nearly 3.4 million euro, and will be carried out within the next 36 months.Green Sahara or the origins of ancient EgyptThe recent weather anomalies and the ongoing debate on the climate change inspire reflection on a wide variety of factors responsible for these procecsses. Structure and mechanism of human Elongator revealedThe latest work of scientists from the Małopolska Centre of Biotechnology (MCB) of the Jagiellonian University describes the first high-resolution cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) structures of human Elongator and its mechanism of action. The study was published recently in Nature Communications.The Jagiellonian University celebrates its 660th anniversary‘Today, we remember 12 May 1364, when King Casimir the Great made the decision to found the Studium Generale in Kraków. The King knew full well that the future of the Polish state must be based on educated people’, said JU Rector Prof. Jacek Popiel in his opening remarks on the Jagiellonian University Day. Prof. Adam Strzembosz, a renowned lawyer and distinguished public figure, was a guest of honour during these celebrations, during which he received the gold Plus Ratio Quam Vis medal.JU becomes the highest ranked Polish university according to CWURThe Jagiellonian University was ranked highest amongst Polish higher education institutions in the Center for World University Rankings 2024 (CWUR). It is closely followed by the University of Warsaw and AGH University of Science and Technology. As usual, Harvard University is at the top of the list.JU will have five new vice-rectorsThe Rector-Elect of the Jagiellonian University Prof. Piotr Jedynak will assume office on 1 September 2024. On May 8, the names of six Vice-Rectors with whom he will cooperate during the 2024-2028 term-in-office were officially announced. The candidates proposed by Prof. Jedynak were approved by the Jagiellonian University Electoral College consisting of 238 representatives of the whole academic community.

Manggha and Manga: The Many Faces of JapanIn 1994 Krakow witnessed the opening of the Manggha Museum of Japanese Art and Technology, created on the initiative of the Kyoto-Krakow Foundation of Andrzej Wajda and Krystyna Zachwatowicz-Wajda. The name of the Museum is a tribute to the collector of Japanese art, Feliks Jasieński (1861–1929), who, fascinated with Japanese woodblock prints, adopted this artistic pseudonym. The conference marks the 30th anniversary of Manggha foundation.

Synchrotron Radiation Centre SolarisThe JU National Synchrotron Radiation Centre SOLARIS is the first of its kind in Central Eastern Europe.
