Tips for writing your appeal explanation statement

Take a hard look at your situation to determine what has kept you from making satisfactory academic progress. Perhaps you need help with time management or study skills. Admit the problem and explain how will you get that help.

Valid Reasons to Submit a SAP Appeal

Severe health issues. Severe personal or family problems. Serious illness or death of a family member (parent, grandparent or sibling) Exceeded time frame for completing the credits required for your degree.

Supporting Documentation

Sources may include counselor, doctor, therapist, police, clergy, Cook Counseling, or Services for Students with Disabilities. It could be a death certificate, a statement from a lawyer, a police or court document or documentation illustrating commitments outside of school.

Write a detailed letter describing the extenuating circ*mstances that prevented you from meeting the SAP standards for GPA, Pace and/or Maximum Credits. Describe in detail how the situation has been resolved. Attach your letter to the SAP appeal form for GPA/Pace or Max Time Frame.

When appealing against a guilty verdict a defendant might say: there was something unfair about the way their trial took place. a mistake was made in their trial. the verdict could not be sustained on the evidence.

For example, a decline in performance can be caused by psychiatric, psychological and social problems and not just physical injury. Even a learning disability, such as ADD/ADHD, can be the basis for a successful appeal, if it is severe enough to have caused the academic problems and is being treated medically.

Appeals aren't always successful —- my success rate for my clients is a little more than 50 percent. But by using these tips, you can increase your chances of success right from the start.

A negative change in your financial picture is always an important reason to appeal for more money. Significant out of pocket medical expenses or a separation, divorce or death of a spouse are good reasons to appeal.

Provide a detailed statement (250 words or less) that explains how the special circ*mstances prevented you from meeting the SAP policy.

How to ask for more money financial aid? ›

Your letter should be honest and concise and should focus on why you need more financial aid. You'll submit your financial aid appeal letter alongside any documents that might support your case. If your appeal is approved, the school will generate a new financial aid package and send you their new offer.

Maximum Number of Appeals: Students are limited to a maximum of three approved appeals during their program of study. (Example: You can apply for an appeal as many times as you want, but once you have 3 approved appeals, you can no longer appeal.)

If your SAP Appeal is denied, you are not eligible to receive financial aid funding, however may wish to apply for a Private Alternative loan.

This could include medical records or other documentation that can support the reason for your appeal. Please keep in mind that an appeal submitted without supporting documentation can be denied and you will not be able to re-appeal. Paper SAP Appeals will not be accepted.

Unfortunately, last term my GPA dipped to 2.3. Now, I am in danger of losing all of my financial aid. This type of academic performance is extremely uncharacteristic of me, so I am writing an appeal to you to give me another chance to pull my grades up.
