Maps are of little help when it comes to size comparisons, World Population Review says. They can be misleading because they’re two-dimensional representations of a three-dimensional world. A more accurate way to compare countries is by the area of each, usually measured in square miles or square kilometers.
When it comes to comparing areas of the country, however, there’s a distinction between the land area and area that’s covered by water bodies like lakes, reservoirs and rivers. While the total surface area of countries is made up of both, there’s a significant difference between the countries with higher land area like the U.S., compared with Canada, which has numerous inland water bodies.
The transcontinental country, which spans Asia and Europe, has a total surfacearea of 17.1 million square kilometers – Russia consists of land area for the most part, and only about 4% of the total areaaccounts for territorial waters. In contrast, about 9%of Canada’s surfaceapproximately is covered with water.
In fact, Russia is so large it has nine time zones and borders 16 other countries.
What are the three largest countries in the world?
The U.S.and China have been head-to-head for the position of the third largest country in the world. Considering the total surface area of both countries including land andwater, the United States takes up 9.8 million square kilometers while China has 9.6 million square kilometers, according to World Atlas. However, China leads when it comes to the land area compared with the U.S. World Atlas says China is approximately 2% larger than the U.S. in terms of land area.
According to history.com, Vatican City is the smallest. Located inRome, Italy, the home of the Pope spans less than half a square kilometer.
Followed by Vatican City, the Principality of Monaco and Nauru take the spots for the second and third-smallest countriesin the world, according to World Atlas.
The U.S. is approximately half the size of Russia when compared to its landmasses. According to NationMaster.com, Russia is 1.8 times larger than America.
Time zones of a country include that of dependent territories (except Antarctic claims). France, including its overseas territories, has the most time zones with 12 (13 including its claim in Antarctica).
However, the total area of the United States, including Alaska and Hawaii, ranks third or fourth. In land area only, the country ranks fourth, behind Russia, Canada, and China, but ahead of Brazil and Australia.
Even when excluding Taiwan and other disputed territories, China is larger than the United States, both in terms of land area, and in terms of land area including inland waterbodies. Is Greenland bigger than the USA? No,it only looks bigger on some maps!
Altogether, France covers 12 different time zones—ranging from UTC -10 to UTC -12. More than any other country. Some sources say they have 13 or 14 (probably a daylight saving time issue), but at least everyone agrees that France is #1.
China is nowadays the only large country other than India to have only one time zone and is the largest single time zone area in the world. In comparison, the United States, a country of similar geographical area to China, has four major time zones, each separated by an hour.
For example, India, Iran, Afghanistan, Burma, Newfoundland, Venezuela, the Marquesas, and parts of Australia use half-hour deviations from standard time. Other nations, such as Nepal, use quarter-hour deviations. This means that there are approximately 40 time zones rather than 24.
We all have 24 hours in our day, but there are 38 time zones observed across the world offset from Coordinated Universal Time (UTC), and each country gets to pick the one it aligns with.
UTC is a time standard, not a time zone. No country “uses” UTC, but every country's time is based on UTC. Today, there are 37 time zones in use, and they often don't match up with their actual lines of longitude, but follow national and international borders.
Although the total area of the US is approximately 500,000 square miles larger than the total area of Brazil, Brazil is larger than the contiguous US by approximately 300,000 square miles. About 685,924 square miles of the US is covered by water compared to only 21,441 square miles of Brazil.
Australia is the planet's sixth largest country after Russia, Canada, China, the USA, and Brazil. At 7 688 287km2, it accounts for just five percent of the world's land area of 149 450 000 km2, and although it is the smallest continental land mass, it is the world's largest island.
How big is Russia compared with the U.S.? The U.S. is approximately half the size of Russia when compared to its landmasses. According to NationMaster.com, Russia is 1.8 times larger than America.
The land area of Canada is 3, 855, 103 square miles compared to America's 3, 794, 083, making Canada 1.6% larger that the States. Even though Canada is a larger country, the United States has a population of 307,212,123 people compared to 33,487,208 people in Canada in 2010.
India is about one-third the size of the US, yet it is the second most populous country in the world. The gap of the population between the two countries is 746 million.
These temporal divisions are established along international borders and their respective subdivisions, prioritizing practicality in facilitating communication over adherence to longitudinal lines. France commands the highest number of time zones worldwide, totalling a remarkable 12 time zones.
It is also referred to as the "latest time zone" on Earth, as clocks in it always show the 'latest' (i.e., most advanced) time of all time zones. UTC+14:00 stretches as far as 30° east of the 180° longitude line and creates a large fold in the International Date Line around the Pacific nation of Kiribati.
Owing to the number of territories it governs beyond Europe, France has 12 (and for a period of the year 13) time zones. Metropolitan France operates on Central European Summer Time (UTC+2), while its dependencies range from Tahiti Time (UTC-10) in French Polynesia to Wallis & Futuna Time (UTC+12) in the South Pacific.
China has one time zone. It is officially called China Standard Time (CST). It is 8 hours ahead of Coordinated Universal Time (UTC+08:00). There is no daylight saving time.
