Which is better refundable or nonrefundable? ›

Refundable fares generally earn bonus redeemable miles and elite-qualifying miles. 1. Up-front cost will be much higher in most cases (sometimes 2 – 4 times more expensive) than non-refundable fares.

Refundable Plane Tickets. Purchasing a nonrefundable plane ticket means if you cancel your trip, you are not entitled to a cash refund of the full fare of your ticket. On the other hand, a refundable plane ticket allows you to cancel your airfare and receive a refund to your method of payment.

Paying extra for a refundable ticket isn't necessarily a wrong choice, but it might leave you wanting more. At this point in the purchase of your tickets, many airlines may try to grab you with a sense of urgency and tempt you with convenience.

Nonrefundable fares, on the other hand, cannot be returned for a full refund. Some nonrefundable fares can be canceled or changed for a partial refund in the form of an airline flight voucher, but rarely can you receive cash or credit card reimbursem*nt for a canceled nonrefundable fare.

Nonrefundable credits can only take the tax liability to zero (so that the taxpayer does not owe any tax). They do not create a refund. Refundable credits can actually produce a refund for the taxpayer, even if the taxpayer does not have a tax liability (owe any taxes).

When an airline says that a ticket is nonrefundable, it doesn't mean that you can't cancel a ticket. Depending on the ticket type, often, 'nonrefundable' simply means: The airline will not give you all of your money back if you cancel (true for most basic economy tickets).

Note: While airlines are not required to issue a refund for non-refundable tickets, they are free to do so or they may issue a credit or travel voucher for future use on the airline.

If you purchased a round-trip flight and need to change the first leg to a different day, your best bet will likely be to pay the change fee and book a new flight. If you only need to change the return portion of a round trip, however, it may be cheaper to book a new one-way flight than to pay the cancellation fee.

Why is it that a return fare usually costs less than the sum of two one-way fares over the same route? Because airlines know you're almost certainly travelling both ways, and they want to make sure you're sitting in one of their seats for both legs of your journey. Buying the whole is cheaper than buying two halves.
