Imagine contributing to the production and delivery of sustainable green electricity that powers nearly one-seventh of Dutch consumption. The Dutch government has concluded its largest tender process for two offshore wind farms off the Dutch coast. These projects will generate renewable electricity equivalent to almost 14% of the Dutch current electricity demand. A consortium of SSE Renewables, a leading developer and operator of renewable energy, along with Dutch pension fund ABP and its asset manager APG, was awarded the winning bid for IJmuiden Ver Alpha. Rabobank successfully acted as sole financial advisor for this landmark project.The consortium proposed innovative measures to reduce ecological impacts while enhancing biodiversity. This ecologically sensitive approach aims to develop offshore wind in harmony with the Dutch North Sea's environment, contributing positively to the decarbonization and energy security of the Netherlands. Additionally, a 'living laboratory' will be established to demonstrate how offshore wind farms can combat climate change. On World Environment Day 2024, our colleagues in Asia co-hosted a Sustainability Symposium on the tall ship Clipper Stad Amsterdam. This event was held in collaboration with the Consulate General of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Shanghai. During the event, several sustainability achievements of Dutch companies in China and beyond were showcased, also by Rabobank experts. With our international presence and deep understanding of industry transitions and value chains, Rabobank supports many clients across the world to realize their vision. We are proud partners of many global leaders who are at the forefront of their business.The Clipper Stad Amsterdam, a beautiful tall ship built in 1997, was refitted in 2021 with new exhaust gas and wastewater treatment installations. These upgrades, along with an improved shore power connection, have made the ship more sustainable. She is currently sailing the world towards her 2025 destination: Amsterdam, Netherlands.As the official flagship of the city of Amsterdam, the Clipper Stad Amsterdam will participate in the 10th edition of the renowned nautical event SAIL Amsterdam. Senior analyst David Magaña cracked this nut, as he presented his five-year almond market outlook at the 3rd Portugal Nuts Congress in Beja, Portugal. Despite global production returning to higher levels, a strong rebound in almond prices is expected over the next 12-18 months. Rabobank hosted an event to explore sustainable financing opportunities to address the challenges in energy transitions with its partners. The event, themed "Integrating Intermittent Capacity in the Energy System of the Future: The Case for Battery Storage", focused on the role of batteries in enhancing energy grids during the rise of renewable energy sources.In his keynote speech, Lord Adair Turner from the Energy Transitions Commission (ETC) highlighted the impressive growth of solar PV, noting it continues to outperform growth expectations. He emphasized the increasing promise of electrification and the declining prices of batteries, positioning renewable generation combined with battery storage as a key solution for system balance challenges across different regions, including the EU.Other topics included insights on the EU battery storage market, examining its diverse revenue streams and offering recommendations for market positioning, as well as Rabobank’s view on trends in battery storage financing. The event concluded with a panel discussion on system integration and the outlook for the battery storage market, featuring ETC and our partners from DIF Capital Partners, Cero Generation, and TenneT.The battery storage market is rapidly scaling up and maturing. Rabobank is proud to support green travel across Europe by refinancing the high-speed rail network of Eurostar. Rabobank played a key role in the refinancing of Eurostar Group, merging the facilities of the former Thalys and Eurostar entities. This effort underscores our commitment to accelerating the energy transition within the transport sector.With the increasing demand for sustainable travel, high-speed electric rail is anticipated to play a significant role in reducing carbon emissions and partly replacing short-haul flights. Eurostar connects Belgium, France, Germany, and the Netherlands with the United Kingdom and aims to double passenger numbers to 30 million travellers by 2030. Our colleague Wouter Marinus Kool, Chief Representative Office Rabobank Kenya, participated in a panel at GTR East Africa - Trade and export finance conference in Nairobi, focussing on “Collaboration and Innovation to Tackle Food Insecurity.” Alongside key F&A value chain players like trader ETG, commercial bank Nedbank, IFC, WFP, and insurer Pula, he discussed rising food insecurity in East Africa. Most important factors for the African food insecurity are population growth, stagnant yields, increased import costs, and extreme weather events. Significant investments are needed to increase yields, improve water management, and reduce food loss. This can be done through a holistic value chain approach with different players sharing risk and providing different bespoke solutions. Tech and innovation will definitely be an enabler, but cannot solve everything.
