To be fair, AA's operations have a lot more delays on a normal basis - so it's easier to get back to normal

Friends daughter has her LAS-AUS flight canceled last night (could have been a lost over somewhere he didnt tell me).
She checked her bag to Delta and ended up buying a SWA flight home.
The bag should make it to AUS correct? Or will it sit in LAS in perpetuity?

Canceled flight bags are being returned to the baggage claim to be reclaimed at outstations so its likely sitting near the LAS baggage service office. If she files a baggage service claim with DL, they probably eventually will get it to her. She should have went to baggage claim after the flight was canceled to reclaim it and rechecked it with WN (checked bags are free on WN).

I get that a massive amount of cancellations causes chaos on the ramp (I've worked on the ramp, in the local ramp tower as a gate planner, and in SOC), but I think if they'd been more strategic with their cancellations, this could have been avoidable or at least manageable. The average delays were close to 6 hours at one point...you'll never recover the operation with an average multi hour delay into your primary hub for days in a row. Today there's also the threat of thunderstorms.
We'll prob never find out what really happened, but sounds like the failures extend beyond just "scheduling".
It feels like over the weekend, even though they canceled a lot, they kept trying to "fly to failure" and then at the end of each night they had no crews or aircraft available so they ended up canceling what was left and also creating a cascading problem the next day. Contrasted with, say, cancelling out two or three departure banks in a row to strategically reset planes and crews in the right places (similar to how they handle snow in ATL or a BOS nor'easter). I wonder if because they knew it was such a busy weekend and there were few if any alternatives available for passengers, they wanted to keep people moving (or at least create the appearance of doing so) and avoid the hard reset option. Hindsight is 20/20 I guess. As you said, we'll probably never know.

At a minimum have a Plan B (on another airline) if you really want to go.
I have an international trip departing this weekend on DL and am already making backup plans (see comment above about booking last minute backups).

Wow the DL canceled flight number just continually keeps going up. Over 700 now and on track to exceed 1000 again.

I think they are doing some form of a hard reset, which they should have done 2 days ago. Would fully expect over 1,000 again today. In ATL now and my flight was just canceled just before boarding citing crew.

I'm wondering when they'll be fully reset. I have flights on 24 JUL TPA-ATL-BNA and on 28 JUL BNA-ATL-SJU. Keeping them in place, but I have AA and B6 and WN backups as well. The WN flight has the benefit of being BNA-SJU nonstop which seems extra-desirable in current conditions.
Seems like it won't really be fixed until BOTH the crew scheduling tools are fixed *AND* crews and aircraft are in correct places, so I could easily see it taking all week if not even longer. Then of course recovering from all the disrupted flights on the passenger side (including people voluntarily deferring travel), so higher load factors for a while.

Maybe a soft reset. Get everybody except the full crew on the plane and THEN cancel the flight-- is not a hard reset by any stretch. A hard reset would be that passengers should know well in advance of going to the airport that their flight will not be operating to give them time to cancel or find an alternative option---while the crew is fully aware of what their schedule will look like for the day.
