How far apart should trellis wires be? ›

Space the wires 30-45cm (12-18in) apart with the lowest wire 30cm (1ft) above soil level. Wooden trellis screwed to thick wooden battens to raise it from the wall surface, with the bottom 30cm (1ft) above soil level to prevent rotting.

Building and making a garden trellis is not only cheaper than buying it ready-made, but also ensures you can get it the right shape, size, and thickness to match what you're growing.

We recommend a trellis that's tall enough to accommodate growing vines, but not so tall that you'd have to stretch to pick. Our trellises measure 6 feet tall, but anywhere from 4 to 6 feet will work for growing most vining plants vertically. If your vines begin to grow out of hand, pinch off the top tip of the vine.

Distance between curtains ranges from 2 to 4 feet, depending on desire to mechanize harvest. Spacing between vines is 6 to 8 feet. Spacing between rows is 11 to 12 feet.

I-Trellis (Hedgerow)

Posts can be metal or wood treated for in-ground use, and should be set at least 2 ft deep and spaced about 25 to 30 ft apart.

My favorite trellising string is the simple classic green garden twine. It's fairly cheap, easy to find at garden centers and hardware stores, holds up to weather, blends into the garden nicely, and has a vintage look.

As a general rule, the posts need to be set approximately 600mm (2ft) into the ground.

The construction of DIY trellising will require a number of different power tools, screws, and the materials. The cost of these will quickly grow and make the project a bit more expensive than the builder may have thought at the beginning of the construction process.

Trellis help you cover a wall with climbing plants without worrying about them damaging the structure of the wall. Don't secure the trellis flush against the wall as this will leave no room for your climbers to twine around it and prevent air circulation around your plants.

Average Wall Gap

An average wall distance of about 10 cm is usual for most creepers and climbers, especially to allow annual shoots to be set behind the trellis. This then reduces your maintenance work because there is no need totie them up.

How tall should a cucumber trellis be? Five to six feet is the optimal height for a cucumber trellis because it allows the plant to grow to its full potential while making harvesting easier for the gardener. There is no need for a trellis to be any taller.
