Why are Havanese dogs so expensive? ›

While they are smaller, they are sturdier than other toy breeds. Their low-shedding coat requires quite a bit of grooming, but they don't require much physical activity. They are generally considered “high-end” dogs. This factor, combined with their rarity, makes them a bit more expensive than most other dogs.

Havanese puppies are alert and energetic; they can sometimes be fairly vocal. While they are not like Chihuahuas or Pomeranians, barking at everything they see, they will get yappy when they notice a mailman or a stray squirrel in their yard.

Lifespan. Like most small dogs, Havanese will likely live for well over a decade. In fact, the average Havanese lifespan is 14 to 16 years — and some of them can live even longer than this. If you get a Havanese dog as a puppy, be prepared for a long life with your new companion.

They Could Have Separation Anxiety

If you have a busy schedule and can't spend much time with your dog, a Havanese may not be the right breed for you. They can develop separation anxiety and become destructive if left alone for too long. Fortunately, this can be overcome, as you'll discover in our next point.

It is believed that the Blanquito was eventually cross-bred with other bichon types, including the poodle, to create what is now known as the Havanese.

Heart failure is a leading cause of death among Havanese in their golden years. Most heart disease in dogs is caused by weakening of a valve. A heart valve slowly becomes deformed so that it no longer closes tightly. Blood then leaks back around this valve and strains the heart.

Male Havanese tend to be more laidback and easygoing. They are friendly and can be more tolerant and playful with smaller children. Your attention will be well sought after with a male Havanese, and you can expect a fair share of affection.

Havanese are pretty quiet dogs, actually. They hardly bark, whine, mutter, grumble, growl or squeak! They will announce an arrival to the home, not just strangers but once you are in and properly greeted, it is over. They make good watch dogs, as long as you are watching for anything that is new!

There is nothing and I mean nothing like more than one Havanese. As an owner of seven, well, it is far better than TV. Each has their jobs, pack position and unique personality that they bring to the pack. An effective pack (more than 1) will compliment, help and yes even need and want 'one on one' time from you.

Although the most common base coat color is black, points are also found often on Sable, Blue, Silver or Chocolate coats. The classic Black coat with Tan Points, without any white trim at all, is known as the Black & Tan.

Purchasing from a Breeder: Expect to pay between $650 and $1800. Reputable breeders focus on health and temperament, often registering with breed clubs ([link to AKC Havanese page]). Puppies with champion bloodlines may cost more.

Havanese have long been popular with the rich and famous, from Queen Victoria and Charles Dickens, to Venus Williams, Susan Sarandon, Jane Fonda and Jennifer Love Hewitt. The popularity of this still relatively rare breed cannot be called a modern trend!
